Componium Ensemble コンポニウム・アンサンブル: 8 Automated Works
Spencer Doran’s (Visible Cloaks) neues Projekt ‚Componium Ensemble‚ präsentiert jetzt eine Deut EP namens ‚8 Automated Works 八つの自動作曲作品集‘. Doran experimentiert hier mit virtuellen automatisierten Instrumenten. Eine wahrnehmungsöffnende Erfahrung zwischen Klassik und dem typischen ‚Cloaks-Feeling‘.

Ich verfolge das Schaffen von Spencer Doran und Ryan Carlile aka ‚Visible Cloaks‘ schon seit 2014. Doran gründete das Projekt allerdings bereits Solo in 2011. Das Duo stammt ursprünglich aus Portland,Oregon, doch beide Musiker leben seit längerem schon in Japan.
Obwohl seit der Veröffentlichung von ‚Reassemblage‘ in 2014 noch kein neues Album von ‚Visible Cloaks‘ erschienen ist, sind die beiden sehr aktiv in der Kunst und Ambient Szene Nippons unterwegs. Sie vertonten diverse Installationen und 2019 erschien eine tolle Zusammenarbeit mit Yoshio Ojima and Satsuki Shibano auf FRKWYS namens ‚serenitatem“.
Mit ‚Componium Ensemble‘ ist Spencer Doran nun wieder solo aktiv. Die acht Stücke auf der Debut EP bilden das Konzept sog. automatisierter Instrumente wie z.b. dem ‚organum hydraulicum‚ (einer römischen Wasserorgel), deren Geschichte bis in das 9. Jahrhundert zurückgeht mit digitalen Produktionstechniken auf anregende Weise neu ab.
Wir hören verspielte organisch-tröpfelnde Tunes, mit dem typischen ‚Cloaks-Feeling‘ in Kombination mit Klarinette, Cello oder Flöte. Manchmal muss man genau hinhören um die Besonderheiten zu entdecken. So mag ich das.
Visible Cloaks meets Classic, klingt fantastisch!
Das Vinyl wäre für mich natürlich ein NoBrainer gewesen, dann habe ich aber gemerkt dass es leider eine 10″ ist. Ich mag einfach keine kleineren Schallplatten in meinem Regal und deshalb bleibt sie bei mir digital.
Dennoch freue ich mich sehr darüber und hoffe, dass wir in Zukunft noch mehr vom ‚Componium Ensemble‘ zu Hören bekommen werden. Probs übrigens auch für das Artwork von Grafik-Designer Kai Yoshizawa.
EM Records is proud to present “8 Automated Works”, the first full release by Componium Ensemble, an “indeterminate chamber music” ensemble helmed by Spencer Doran of Visible Cloaks. Situated in a lineage of automated music that traces back to the ancient Greeks, Doran uses the possibilities of digital technology and its ability to automate a huge range of virtual instruments to move beyond human impulses and limitations to allow “new shapes to emerge”. Dedicated also to Noah Creshevsky, pioneer of what can be considered cyber-human music, Componium Ensemble features a wide and intriguing range of instruments including prepared piano, bowed harpsichord, celesta, bass clarinet, flute, cello, bamboo tingklik and more, often in multiple groupings.
Despite this variety of instrumentation and the seemingly formidable theoretical underpinnings, the music is very accessible and attractive, spaciousand fresh, with a light touch and a sophisticated melodic sense which will appeal to pop fans as well as classical/contemporary music listeners. The album is mixed by longtime collaborator Joe Williams (Motion Graphics, Lifted) and available in 10-inch vinyl, CD and Digital formats, with EN/JP liner notes by Doran and a hyper-realistic cover by Japanese visual artist/graphic designer Kai Yoshizawa, using 3DCG software. The CD and Digital formats also feature a Carl Stone remix bonus track.
