The Making of AKIRA

Change my mind!
Unlike most anime productions, the film was not produced using low-cost limited animation, in which only a few parts of the image are animated and image slides are used repeatedly. Instead, over 160,000 animation slides were created to achieve the smoothest possible animation. Computer animation was used to animate falling objects, lighting effects, and other physical processes.
To achieve the scene-to-scene transitions Otomo wanted, cinematographer Katsuji Misawa filmed the individual drawings and their respective backgrounds overlapping. Over 1,000 different houses and city elements were drawn for the backgrounds. The greatest possible sharpness and brilliance of the images was achieved by using 70 mm film, which is otherwise unusual in animated films.
A total of 327 colors were used, 50 of which were created specifically for this production. These are mainly dark colors, as large parts of the film take place in the dark. Instead of the blue tones usually used in night scenes, dark red and green tones were used. The Quick Action Recorder was used extensively to test complex scenes. However, contrary to the producers‘ claims, this was not a new development, but had already been common practice in animated films for about 10 years.
